Workbasket Edging April 1948
Workbasket Pattern Edging
Beware! The printed patterns in many vintage publications are not always correct. They frequently have errors. This is one example. For me, I choose to follow what I see in the lace over any "strange" or missing directions.

A simple edging to tat but it has lots of possibilities. This will tat up quickly and could well become a hand-crafted tatted lace holiday tree garland and even an heirloom for the grandkids. Of course, adding beads would be lovely, too. Traditional white thread could be replaced by holiday colors. Small decorations, such as holiday-themed beads or buttons may be added as it is tatted.

To save time instead of stringing beads and buttons before you begin to tat, tat up to the point you would like a decoration. Then begin a picot but use the crochet hook to pull the loop through the button and over to where you can actually join to the loop.

R = ring, CH = chain, RW = reverse work, p = picot, + = join, clr = close ring

Begin with the cloverleaf and tat the left side ring first.

R 5 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 5 clr . Do not reverse work.
R 5 + (join to last picot of previous ring) 3 - 3 - 1 - 1 - 3 - 3 - 5 clr. Do not reverse work.
R 5 + (join to last picot of previous ring) 3 - 3 - 3 - 3 - 5 clr. RW

CH 5 - 5 (Note that on repeats this picot is a join to the chain adjacent.) RW

R 4 + (join to the next to last p on the right side ring of the cloverleaf) 3 - 3 - 4 clr. RW

CH 4 - 4 RW

R 3 + (join to last picot of previous ring)* 3 - 3 - 3 clr. RW

*[Editor's note. At this point in the printed instructions there is an error. The next step in finishing this ring was left out. The following directions match the double stitch counts as noted on the above photo.]

CH 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 rw.

R 3 - 3 + (join across to middle picot of last ring) 3 - 3 clr. RW

CH 4 - 4 RW

R 4 + (join to picot of previous ring) 3 + (join across to adjacent ring) 3 - 4 clr. RW

CH 5 - 5 RW

Begin repeat with the cloverleaf. Note the left side ring join to the previous ring and also joins across to the previous cloverleaf ring.
